This helpful guide will explain all of the different types of Anne Arundel County permits you’ll need for a Maryland basement remodeling job, exactly what is considered a finished basement in Anne Arundel County, and how to pass Anne Arundel inspections. Let’s start with the basics!

What Kind of Anne Arundel County Permits do I Need for Basement Remodeling?

If you are waterproofing a basement, all you need is a simple building permit. However, if you are finishing a basement in Anne Arundel, MD, you are going to need the following permits:

  • Building Permit
  • Electrical Permit
  • Plumbing Permit
  • Mechanical Permit (this covers all HVAC work)

What Information Do I Need to Get a Anne Arundel County Building Permit?

When applying for a building permit (Anne Arundel County, MD), you are going to need to submit one copy of a site plan and three copies of the construction plan.

The site plan:

  • Must be drawn to scale by professional engineering standards
  • Must show the “location, configuration, and dimensions” of your work.
  • Must show easements, property lines, private wells or septic systems, and a grinder pump (if any).
  • Only one site plan copy is needed.
  • If the basement does not have a private well or septic system, no site plan is required.

Construction plans:

  • Must use an official architectural scale
  • Must show all room dimensions
  • Must show what kind of materials will be used
  • Must outline the actual construction process
  • Three copies are needed.

How Much do Anne Arundel County Permits Cost?

Electrical, building, and mechanical permits all come with a $25 application fee (plumbing does not).

What is Considered a Finished Basement in Anne Arundel County, Maryland?

A finished basement in Anne Arundel County, Maryland needs to have the proper measurements. Here’s an official checklist containing the most crucial measurements you’ll need to remember:

Habitable Rooms – Any room that is going to be inhabited must have a minimum area of 70 square feet, and a minimum horizontal dimension of 7 feet.

  • A minimum horizontal dimension means the largest circular diameter within the confines of a room.

Bedroom Windows – Each bedroom must have at least one bedroom window that has:

  • A minimum “clear opening” of 5.7 square feet (this allows a fireman who is wearing breathing apparatus to fit through the door).
  • 24 inches for minimum opening height.
  • 20 inches for minimum opening width.
  • A sill height no more than 44 inches.

Ceiling Height – The minimum height of the ceiling depends on the type of room.

  • Habitable Rooms must be 7 feet tall.
  • All other areas must be at least 6’8 feet tall, but 6’4 feet tall if under beams or ductwork.

Hallways – All hallways must have a minimum width of 36 inches.

Stairways  -- All stairways must be at least 36 inches wide and have at least 6’8 feet of headroom. The stair tread itself must be 10 inches wide, and the stairs themselves must rise no more than 7-3/4 inches.

Bathrooms – The shower or bathtub area must use a “non-absorbent surface”.

Stud Walls – Stud walls must use 2 x 4 inch studs, with the center of each stud placed at 16-inch intervals. Pressure-treated sole plates must be used.

Warm Air Furnaces – May not be installed in closets, or bedrooms, or bathrooms.

Fuse Boxes – May not be installed in clothing closets.

How to Pass Anne Arundel County Inspections

Simply getting Anne Arundel County permits isn’t enough. To pass Anne Arundel County inspections, your basement must be up to Anne Arundel County, Maryland basement remodeling Code. For residential properties, an Anne Arundel County inspections officer will be checking the following:

  • Windows and doorways must use double studs and double headers, and the headers have to be set on the studs, on edge.
  • A finished basement in Anne Arundel, Maryland must have two separate exits.
  • A basement wall must utilize R-10 (for belowground) or R-13 insulation (for stud walls).
